A Star Certificate for Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was fighting against racism
Nelson Mandela's life is a symbol of struggle, courage and honor for the whole planet. He waived his claim with the people of Thembu to become a lawyer and to fight for human rights. Naming a star after Nelson Mandela is one of the least things we could do to remember that special personality.
Why does Nelson Mandela deserve his own star?
Nelson was a fighter; he had a higher vision and tried to help other people in need. He struggled with racism all his life; but also against his own government and spent 26 years in prison for defending his human rights and the rights of all people affected by apartheid and racism. He dedicated his own life to the freedom of others.

The life of Nelson Mandela
Nelson was born on July 18, 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa; his maiden name is Rolihlahla Mandela. One of his teachers named him Nelson, as it was usual in South African schools.
He was the son of Nkosi Gadla Mandela, the chief adviser of Jongintaba Dalindyebo, the reigning king of the Thembu.
Mandela studied at Healdtown and then moved to the University College of Fort Hare; but unfortunately he did not graduate because he was expelled for participating in a protest. However, this did not stop him from completing his studies at the University of South Africa later in his life.
In 1944 he joined the African National Congress, where he was involved in the formation of the ANC Youth League and clearly opposed the National Party's apartheid policies.
Apartheid was a policy of extreme racial segregation in the Republic of South Africa. It also established which races can participate in government decisions, what jobs they should have, and whether or not they can own land.
In 1952 Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo founded the first black law firm in South Africa. Both specialized in cases related to apartheid law. Therefore, one could argue that by doing this, Nelson started an open battle against the legislation.
In 1956 Nelson was arrested along with other people. All of these people have been targeted by the government for fighting apartheid. This situation apparently had an impact on Nelson's life, which led to his divorce from his wife Evelyn. They had two sons and two daughters and eventually divorced in 1958. He then married Nomzamo Winifred.
In Sharpeville, circumstances changed for South Africa and Nelson. The police massacred numerous unarmed black South Africans in 1960 and banned the African National Congress. This marked the beginning of the fight for freedom and the end of racism in South Africa.
Shortly after his return from Algeria, Nelson was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. In 1963 Mandela was arrested and charged with treason, sabotage and conspiracy. In the Rivonia trial the judges sentenced him to life imprisonment. After all, he was in prison from 1964 to 1990.
On two separate occasions, Mandela was offered his freedom if he would accept the then-imposed racist government, but obviously he objected both times. A strong sign of his will.
Nelson Mandelas later years
Nelson Mandela was finally released from prison in 1990. After his release, he was elected head of the ANC. The negotiations between the ANC and the President led to the ending of apartheid and a peaceful transition to non-racist democracy.
In 1994, the ANC and Mandela won the presidential elections in South Africa and, as President, Nelson built democratic institutions, investigated crimes during apartheid and ensured a brighter future for the country.
In 1999 he ended his tenure and changed to the internationally renowned Nelson Mandela Foundation. Most of all, he spent his last years still looking for a more just world.
Nelson searched for a peaceful approach to most of his arguments in life, he always looked for a better way and fought for it. That's why Nelson Mandela deserves his own star in the night sky.
